This Training Guide was compiled for community-based HIV and AIDS workers, but may be useful for other individuals or groups. It is based on the premise that a significant proportion of vulnerable children and their caregivers in low income areas have unmet mental health needs that place them at risk for developing mental health problems and disorders. This premise challenges the assertion that there are only small numbers of such children, being those that require specialised mental health interventions. It also challenges the notion that ‘love (“ordinary psychosocial care and support”) is enough’ for vulnerable children, motivating that educating
caregivers and HIV and AIDS workers about the emotional development and mental health needs of vulnerable children is essential for their wellbeing.
